Rick's Story

At four years old I told my mother I was the fastest kid in the neighborhood and I wanted to run in a race. I became a student of track and field, and that is when I started doing research on the great Jessie Owens four time Olympic gold medalist.

Training in the Bay Area

At the age of ten my family and I moved to the bay area California. I left a promising amateur boxing career in Los Angeles where my record was 20-2-1. I loved the bay area and that is where I began to focus on track and field. During track season, my younger sister Maya and I would ride the bus from Alameda to the University of California Berkeley, where we would train at the track almost everyday.

"My greatest fan, my Mom, noticed my athletic abilty as a toddler when I started doing flips off our couch. I turned two and she would have to coax me to take off my football helmet before I went to bed. My mom's the real champion!"

My sister my hero and inspiration dominated her competition. Of course she was only eight, but damn good. We became a great team and started to get some notoriety around town. Later that year we won the city championships for Washington Park, placing first in the long jump and high jump and second in the fifty and one hundred yard dash. It was a good day.
